Fetish Modernity

exhibition, which is the culmination of the international project RIME

Location:
Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, Betlémské nám. 1, Praha 1

The “Fetish Modernity” exhibition is the culmination of the international project RIME (Réseau international de musées d´ethnographie, International Network of Ethnography Museums), involving ten prestigious European museums in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Austria, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany and experts from the Náprstek Museum in the Czech Republic.

The “Fetish Modernity” exhibition is an interesting way of acquainting the Czech visitor with the western world’s frequent feeling of superiority over the rest of the world as though it alone could enjoy the privilege of modernity. This attitude is a reflection of the false attitude of the exclusive identification of western society with modern discourse serving to observe, classify and judge the world its own way. The result of this process is binary discourse of dialogue and monologue which construes the contrast between faith and science, “civilised” and “primitive” society or even between the industrial technological world and the “rural” or “traditional” world.

One of the objectives of the exhibition is to draw attention to the role of ethnographic museums in the contemporary globalised world.
