Exhibitions (17.3.2017-28.5.2017)

The Exhibition will take you through courtship, the time when two young people get to know each other.

Location: Ethnographic Museum of the National Museum, Kinsky Folly, Kinského zahrada 98, Praha 5

The exhibition will take you through traditional courtship and show you the tokens of love between young couples in the rural areas of 19th and 20th century Bohemia and Moravia. The main inspiration for the Courtship exhibition came from the theme of the opera The Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana. You will be able to enjoy examples of folk costumes from western Bohemia, particularly from the region of Plzeň, whence the opera’s protagonists, Jeník, Mařenka and Kecal, come. The exhibition includes embroideries and cups that take their motifs from this opera.

Another part of the exhibition presents loving gifts that the young gave each other as tokens of their mutual affection. These are, for example, rings, sashes, belts, pictures, embroideries and handkerchiefs, often with interesting messages: “Our true love is gone, another maiden has made you a kerchief.”
