A Measure of Happiness

exhibition of photographs from Mali in Náprstek Museum

Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, Betlémské nám. 1, Praha 1

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. Throughout the year they are beset by terrible weather conditions such as three months of continuous rain that permits only three percent of the land to be cultivated. Despite miserable living conditions and poverty, the people radiate a carefree attitude and a joy of life. At least that’s what the camera caught as photographed by the Czech Ambassador to Algiers, Milan Šarapatek, when he was in Mali. The people, whom his photos have immortalized, are proof that living means more than possessing; and having possessions doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. Their expressions seem to challenge us to ask: what is the basis of happiness?
