A bygone world in photographs by E. St. Vráz

Selection of photographs by the traveller Enrique Stanko Vráz.

Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, Betlémské nám. 1, Praha 1

The exhibition presents a selection of photographs by the traveller Enrique Stanko Vráz, taken between 1885 and 1905.  But who was the mysterious E. St. Vráz? He was a true adventure-seeker, a discoverer of unknown lands - simply an adventurer in the best meaning of the word. He was not only a traveller, but also a writer, photographer and collector.

At the exhibition, we will travel almost the whole world with him. The first steps will take us to Africa. Here, he spent several years in the Gold Coast and underwent several curative stays in the Canary Islands.

His traveller’s spirit took him to other lands; and so, together with him, we journey to the Americas. He lived here and even got married to Vlasta Geringer, with whom he had two children.

The first destinations on his journey through the continent were the rivers of equatorial America, and several years later he documented the large cities of South America, Mexico and Cuba. His stay with the Indians of the Hopi tribe in North America was also significant.

He filled the time between these journeys with visits to Asia. Thanks to this, we will be taken to Borneo, New Guinea, Japan, Korea, Siberia and, of course, China too, where the Yihequan or Boxer Rebellion was culminating at the time. His last journey took him to Yucatán.

Although he spent only the smaller portion of his life in Bohemia, he always thought of himself as Czech and as a representative of the Czech nation in the world. He moved several times with his family between Prague and Chicago until finally, in 1921, he settled permanently in Prague. At that time his health was rather poor, as he was suffering from the consequences of previous bouts of tropical illnesses.  He made his living by writing books and giving lectures.
