Karel Jernek is one of the leading Czech opera stage directors of the second half of the 20th century. He directed more than 200 theatre productions out of which almost two thirds were operas. Most of his drama productions were created in the period between 1933–1957. Based on documents from the estate of Karel Jernek (which has been since 2007 part of the collection of the Theatre Department of the National Museum), the author reconstructs Jernek's wandering between theatres during this period (namely the Brno National Theatre, Municipal Theatre in Prague, and theatres in Bratislava, Liberec, Olomouc, Pilsen, Pardubice). It shows how fundamentally his life and career was influenced by the political/social context of these times: how Jernek involuntarily had to leave all of the places where he directed drama. Until, in 1960 he joined the National Theatre as an opera stage director and definitely had to resign on his drama stage directing career.
