About us

Our five museums have a different focus and were founded at various times and under various circumstances, and they underwent different historical development. Nowadays, they are parts of the National Museum.

The National Museum is the largest museum in the Czech Republic. As the central state museum with collecting, scientific, educational and methodological functions it seeks to enhance the sense of national identity and awareness of being part of the whole framework of European and world community and culture.

There have not been any significant repairs made since the opening of the building. It was also damaged by two military attacks in 1945 and 1968. If we had not started with a renovation of this extraordinary building as soon as possible, there would have been a threat it would have to be closed due to security reasons. So the aim of the demanding reconstruction is to save such significant national cultural heritage and to transform it into a modern museum space.
