Acta Musei Nationalis Pragae – Historia | 2016/70/1-2

The present article is dedicated to the painter Mikuláš Medek (Ivan Medekʼs brother) and the photographer Emila Medkova (née Tláskalová) presenting an image of their work in the cultural and social context of the second half of the 20th century. It brings to the viewer’s eye Mikulas Medekʼs artistic and literary creations –influenced by surrealism as well as artists and poets around Karel Teige – and his way to later art currents such as existentialism, abstraction and imagination. The article further presents Medekʼs art works on public and religious objects and focuses also on the reflection of his personality from the point of view of the generational and contemporary criticism. Emila Medková is a representative of imaginative, surreal, unmanipulated photography. She is one of the most important Czech women in photography after World War II.
