Current knowledge of the distribution of insectivores and rodents in Moravian Karst (central Moravia, Czech Republic) is summarized and evaluated, based on results of own trappings, analyses of the content of owl pellets, and recently published data. In trappings, a sample comprising 1668 individuals of 17 species was obtained. In owl pellets, 1905 individuals of 24 species were found. Altogether, the recent occurrence of 8 insectivore and 18 rodent species can be expected in the area under study. The occurrence of small populations of Eliomys quercinus and Apodemus microps was indicated only in the analyses of owl pellets. The overall character of the samples corresponds to the structure of small mammal communities in forest habitats of middle altitudes of central Europe. The structure of the samples obtained in individual parts of Moravian Karst is influenced by a latitudinal climatic gradient determining the dominance of certain hygrophilous and forest species. The bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) is a dominant species in the northern part of the karst, and the shrews (Soricidae) and the pine vole (Microtus subterraneus) reach also a relatively higher dominance in this region. The field vole (Microtus agrestis) is confined in its distribution namely to the northern parts of the area under study. On the contrary, the only site of the recent occurrence of the European souslik (Spermophilus citellus) was situated in the southern part of the area, and wood mice (Apodemus spp.) are largely prevailing in forest habitats of this region.
