The twenty MN13–MN17 Mediterranean localities studied show a relatively very low to low diversity (one to eight species of lipotyphlan insectivores), when compared to the 27 localities from Central Europe (often well over 10 species of shrews only). This is explained as a result of seasonal aridity, which hampered year-round availability of invertebrate prey items and thus prevented the development of a high lipotyphlan diversity. Due to the low biodiversity no apparent appearance or extinction events are noted during the Plio-Pleistocene, such in contrast to the situation observed in western and central Europe.
