A collection of “monsters” in the Frýdlant castle (northern Bohemia) includes five dermoplastic specimens of domestic animals with some malformations or disruptions: two calves (Bos primigenius f. taurus) – one with three hind legs and one with two fused heads and with a round frontal appendix; two lambs (Ovis ammon f. aries) – one with two fused heads and one with four hind legs; one kid (Capra aegagrus f. hircus) with two fused heads. All specimens are probably a reliable documentation of rare ontogenetic abnormalities. In addition, the exhibition includes a dermoplastic specimen of the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) with sponge antlers and one skull of the camel (Camelus sp.). The presence of the camel’s skull could be connected with some travels in Africa by the nobleman Clam-Gallas – this possibility is supported by the presence of an ostrich egg (Struthio camelus) and a buffalo skull (Syncerus caffer) in other exhibitions of the Frýdlant castle.
