In the period 2000–2002, distribution of the common otter metapopulation was mapped in eastern Bohemia and northern Moravia, its changes were monitored and migration barriers limiting expansion of the otter were studied. In total, 58 mapping squares were checked in 2000, of which 20 were occupied by the otter. In 2001 and 2002 there was a shift in the borders of the otter metapopulation in the squares 5768, 5769, 5866, 5867, 5868, 5966, 5967, 6067, 6169, 6268, 6168 (the rivers Oskava, Oslava, Morava, Krupá, Branná, Vidnávka and Bělá in the Jeseníky Mountains, Tichá Orlice and Lipkovský potok), a short-term occurrence was recorded in the squares 5765, 5865 (Divoká Orlice). A dense network of regular checks was set up at some watercourses. Detailed data were collected, suggesting that the otter moved from Moravia across the main European watersheds to the source area of the Tichá Orlice river in 2002. However, several barriers on the Tichá Orlice still prevent the isolated metapopulations from contact.
