The Pere David’s deer has been kept in six Czech zoos: Prague (since 1955), Ostrava (since 1974), Ohrada (1983–1991), Brno (since 1988), Zlín-Lešná (1992–1999) and Chomutov (since 2002). The young (n=174) were born independent on temperature conditions within a relatively short two-month interval, in 84% between March 21 and May 20. Twins were never born. The ratio of females versus males is 8:9. About 8.1% of newborns died within the first two days. The youngest breeding male had his first fawn when he was 2 years, 11 months and 5 days old, the youngest breeding female gave birth at the age of 1 year, 11 months and 28 days (!). The most fertile female had 12 young, with no one-year break. Intervals between the births were 330–475 days in all females. The oldest breeding hind delivered at the age of 17 years. The oldest individual (female) was culled at the age of 20 years, 1 month and 24 days. The total number of Pere David’s Deer in Czech zoos has been increasing, 39 individuals (15 males and 24 females) were kept at 4 places on 1 January 2010.
