The paper presents results of a long-term research of mammals of the Tábor district in southern Bohemia (Czech Republic). The district, 1,327 sq km in area, corresponds to 18 squares of the standard international mapping grid. The study includes the results of over 40 years of field research of small mammals, and also data obtained from the literature, museum collections, reports of hunting associations, questionnaires, and other unpublished data. In total, 63 species have been documented in the area, i.e. roughly three-quarters (71%) of the 89 mammal species found in the Czech Republic. The relatively small area of the Tábor district is home to a variety of mammals, predominantly forest and wetland species. The former occurrence of Spermophilus citellus is interesting from the zoogeographical point of view, being recorded for the last time in the 1960s. In contrast, Crocidura leucodon is a clearly expanding species in the Tábor district, as elsewhere in the country. This species was first recorded in the district in the early 2000s, and more recently it has been documented in 13 mapping squares. The same applies to the occurence of Nyctereutes procyonides, which was first reported in 2001, and is now found in 14 mapping squares. In addition, the paper includes some data related to small mammal communities in different types of habitats.
