In 2012, the National Museum acquired a portrait of Josef Jungmann (1773–1847), who as a linguist contributed to the rescue of the Czech language. Jungmann is counted among the leading creators of the Czech National Revival as he devoted his lifetime work to the Czech language at the time of the progressive Germanization of the Czech Lands. The portrait is the only authentic painted portrait created during Jungmann’s life by Antonín Machek (1755–1844) in 1833. At the time of Biedermeier, the painter was the most popular Czech portraitist. This portrait served then as a recognized pattern in the development of the absolute majority of other Jungmann’s portraits, many decades of which various artists created to these days. At least several major among them is mentioned in the article. This Machek’s oil is therefore valuable both from the artistic and above all cultural and historical reasons. 180 years after its origin, the picture was purchased for the state collections from private property of the two representatives of the sixth generation of direct descendants of Josef Jungmann. The portrait became a valuable part of a large collection of portraits administered by the Department of the old Czech history in the National Museum, where it is registered under the number H2-197 967.
