The sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) has been kept in the Prague Zoo since the year 1970. In total 110 young were born there. Fifty individuals were exported to different zoos. Births were recorded all year round with a maximum at the beginning of October, and another peak in March–May. In all the litters, only a single offspring was born. The ratio of females versus males was 52:48. More than 27% of the juveniles did not live longer than half a year. Sexual maturity was reached at the age of two years in young males, and at the age of 1.5 years (exceptionally earlier) in young females, respectively. The gestation period ranged from 8 months and 27 days to 9 months and 6 days. The shortest interval between births was 9 months and 2 days. The most fertile females gave birth to fourteen juveniles. The oldest breeding hind delivered at the age of 14 years. The oldest individual (female) was culled at the age of 14.5 years. Altogether 48 skulls of the Sable antelope were deposited in the collection of the National Museum, Prague.
