This panel exhibition presents visitors with the theme of landscape, which became a national symbol in the second half of the 19th century through the rich collections of the National Museum.

Acting as the centre of attention are two pairs of landscape features in Bohemia: the rivers Vltava and Labe, and the mountains Říp and Blaník, steeped in symbolism. The remembered places of the Czech national identity offered considerable mobilization potential during the formation of the modern Czech nation. They offered a significant source of inspiration to artists, writers and composers, and a stage for many national events. The landscape was not only a physical reality, but became also a symbolic space - the setting of the dreams and aspirations of Czech society.
