Short-term exhibition in the permanent exhibition of the Czech Museum of Music
He saw music as colours and heard colours as music: we are talking about the Lithuanian composer, painter, and visionary Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (September 22, 1875 – April 10, 1911), whose 150th birthday will be celebrated this year. He was active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when Art Nouveau blended with Symbolism and late Romanticism, as well as Impressionism, in European art. Although the fin de siècle was sometimes steeped in melancholy, it also encouraged the search for new directions. All of this is richly reflected in music and in Čiurlionis's paintings and drawings.
At the same time and in a similar artistic atmosphere, works were created by Czech Symbolist poets (Otokar Březina, Antonín Sova), sculptor František Bílek, painters and illustrators Jan Konůpek and Viktor Oliva, and composers Vítězslav Novák, Ladislav Vycpálek, and Josef Suk. Is it possible to compare Čiurlionis' fascinating personality with some of them? Certainly, yes, as natural and folkloric inspiration, cosmological and philosophical motifs, and fantastic visions connect them. The exhibition offers this comparison through publications, copies of Čiurlionis' paintings and photographs taken by him, music prints, and autographs.
