Už ve středověku existovala v místech současného největšího rybníka v parku nádrž, která zásobovala vodou ochranný vodní příkop kolem tvrze pánů z Janovic (vystavěli si ji ve 2. polovině 14. století). Staré mapy prozradily její původní jméno: rybník Za vraty – ovšem nejčastěji byl a je nazývaný jednoduše „parkový“. Současnou podobu získal v době, kdy rytíř Karel Nádherný z Borutína (1846–1895) koupil janovické panství a pustil se do úprav parku na základě návrhů architekta Eduarda Fialy (1855–1924). Tehdy měl rybník ostrovy dva – ten přední, menší, nechala později Sidonie odstranit, protože chtěla získat v parku větší plochu volné vodní hladiny.

In the Middle Ages, a reservoir already existed in the place of today’s largest pond in the park, which supplied the protective moat around the fortress of the lords of Janovice (built in the second half of the 14th century) with water. Old maps revealed its original name: Za vraty pond – but it was and still is most often simply called the “park” pond. It acquired its current form at the time when the knight Karel Nádherný of Borutín (1846–1895) bought the Janovice estate and began changing the park on the basis of designs by the architect Eduard Fiala (1855–1924). At that time, the pond had two islands – and the front one, which was the smaller, was later removed by Sidonie, because she wanted to have a larger area of open water in the park.
